Sustainable Beirut City Planning Post August 2020 Port of Beirut Blast: Case Study of Karantina in Medawar District

The 4 August 2020 Port of Beirut blast caused material damage to an estimated 77,000 apartments located across 10,000 buildings within a 3 km radius the blast, impacting around 300,000, people predominantly in municipality Karantina, which is situated adjacent Beirut. shed light on instability and unsustainable development approach city since well before French mandate circa 1921–1940. impact provides opportunity reassess relationship between many relevant aspects planning including but not limited to: its suburbs, waterfront, center; lack local cross sectorial master plans; preservation heritage versus complexity urban development; growth increased haphazard urbanization; infrastructure/service systems that have over years become increasingly deficient; public spaces; impacts climate; divide inequality only grown deeper all combined adverse quality life. This paper analyzes most suitable indicators one must highlight context propose better sustainable life with focus areas were significantly impacted by recent POB namely Karantina. Examples analyzed include design, open spaces, heritage, infrastructure, fabric. results indicated following four main design features help improve including: (i) connecting Karantina Mar Mkhael through reactivation vacant lots; (ii) Ibrahim Bacha El-Khodr Streets; (iii) redefining historical El Khodr Mosque boundary reclaiming role as landmark; (iv) integration classified built heritage.
